Drug Stabilization
The stability of certain pharmaceutical preparations can be affected by environmental conditions, such as moisture, light, pH etc. and these preparations must be protected by various means. One way of achieving this which often overlooked is the formation of a drug resinate.
VITAMIN B12 is an example of a pharmaceutical product that can deteriorate on storage. The loading of Vitamin B12 onto AMBERLITE™ IRP64 extends the shelf-life to greater than 2 years. The resinate also has a greater stability in the stomach resulting in increased bioavailability.
Whilst the majority of resinates may not specifically target stability issues, this effect may be a hidden additional benefit. For example, Nicotine Polacrilex, used to control the rate of release of nicotine in chewing gum, is more stable to light and oxygen than the pure nicotine oil.
